Diagnosis and therapy of infertility

Diagnosis and Therapy of Infertility

It is important to understand that humans are a relatively infertile species and, on average, conception is achieved only in approximately 22% of menstrual cycles. Consequently, infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after at least one year of sexual intercourse not protected by contraceptive methods.

Infertility is a couple’s problem, not an individual one, which recognizes male and/or female causes. This is why it is important to evaluate both partners from the beginning.

In the male partner there may be alterations in the number and quality of sperm. In women, morphological aspects of the reproductive system (for example the patency of the Fallopian tubes) and functional aspects, such as ovulation and the reserve of ovarian follicles, must be investigated.
